One of Armagh’s best known charities will be appearing on BBC NI TV channels this weekend.

The local Riding for the Disabled School, based in the grounds of the Longstone Hospital is being included In the TV appeal programme, Community Life.

The programme profiles the work of a featured charity and also highlights news and developments within the community and voluntary sectors, and is hosted by Vinny Hurrell, a BBC Presenter and Producer.

The RDA was established in Armagh in 1991 and has been a fantastic example of volunteerism in the area. The current facilities they manage are a testament to the volunteer commitment given over the years.

It  provides an invaluable service to children and adults with various physical and special needs. These participants really look forward to attending their sessions there, which is completely dependent on volunteerism. Riding on the ponies builds confidence and agility.

Vinny spent an afternoon with the RDA group, hearing from the children and young adults and learning about the need for support from the public.

The charity was put forward for the BBC NI Community Life programme by Volunteer Now through their Armagh and Dungannon Outreach Officer, Eamon Murphy. Volunteer Now is the lead organisation which works to promote, develop and support volunteering across N.Ireland.

Eamon said “If you can help the RDA going forward the first thing you need to know is, you do not necessarily need to have any experience of working with horses. The most important thing you can give a charity like this is ‘your time’. The time you give can be as little as two hours per week. RDA have  volunteer roles in leading horses and riders around their fantastic arena, for which full training is given.  They also have a great need for volunteer Trustees and Board Members, IT volunteers and people with general skills in gardening  and DIY."

So watch out for the wonderful volunteers and children showing off all their skills on Community Life which will go out at the following times and on the following dates below.
