5 December - International Volunteer Day

04 December 2014

People's Participation. Make change happen, volunteer!

“On this International Volunteer Day, let us be inspired by the many individuals who selflessly serve others, and let us resolve to do our part to contribute, freely and proactively, to change conditions now towards a better future for all.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (read full Message).

International Volunteer Day (IVD) mandated by the UN General Assembly, is held each year on 5 December.  It is viewed as a unique chance for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, to share their values, and to promote their work among their communities, non-governmental organisations (NG0’s), United Nations agencies, government authorities and the private sector.

IVD 2014 is a global celebration honouring people’s participation in making a change at all levels – locally, nationally and globally.

Volunteer Now would like to say a very big thank you to those hundreds of thousands of volunteers in Northern Ireland who give up their time to help others and their community – Northern Ireland is a better place because of you!

The United Nations Development Goals are a global framework for governments around the world to tackle social, humanitarian, educational, economic and environmental issues. IAVE believes that volunteering, the gift of time to help others and communities enhance their well being, makes a vital contribution and is a strategic resource essential to achieving the Development Goals. Please join with Volunteer Now to endorse IAVE's Call to Action for volunteer involvement to be recognised and supported as an integral part of all global, national and local action plans.
