Local Recipients of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

The Garden of Reflection within the Walls of Derry/Londonderry was the venue for the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) ceremony recognising the significant contribution of 4 local voluntary groups.

The QAVS was presented to Clooney Hall Volunteers Group, Foyle Civic Trust, SSAFA and the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) Volunteers in recognition of their significant voluntary activities within the city and beyond.

The Lord Lieutenant for the County Borough of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey, was joined by a number of civic dignitaries including the Mayor Elisha McCallion and representatives of the Churches in the City,  in what was a significant celebration of the contribution by these groups to all sections of society within the City.

The event was hosted by the Inner City Trust who provided light refreshments at the end of the Award Ceremony.

In welcoming the Lord Lieutenant, civic dignitaries, recipients and guests, Helen Quigley Chief Executive of The Inner City Trust expressed her delight that the Garden of Reflection was being used as the venue for an event which recognised the significant voluntary and cross community efforts of all of the organisations being recognised today.

Prior to presenting the Awards the Lord Lieutenant Dr Garvey commended the Award winners  for their outstanding contribution to volunteering within the City and recognised that for the City to receive four awards out of the total of 188 awards presented nationally was a significant testament to the work of these groups in support of all sections of society.  She expressed her gratitude to the many organisations involved in volunteering throughout the City and looked forward to further QAVS nominations in years to come.

In congratulating the award recipients the Mayor of the City Elisha McCallion, also recognised the outstanding work that each of the organisations undertook in the provision of much needed voluntary services for those in need within the City and in the maintenance of the City’s built heritage.

Clooney Hall Volunteer Group

In recognition of services to the community including the provision of a cross community local parent and toddler group and luncheon club, through their volunteers bringing Christian values to bear on identified and growing need in the local community of Derry/Londonderry for over 30 years.

Foyle Civic Group

Foyle Civic Trust
In recognition of Trust’s active involvement in the preservation and conservation of the local environment/built heritage.  This group have promoted, through lobbying, high standards of planning and architecture in the area comprising Derry/Londonderry, Limavady, Strabane and Inishowen (Co Donegal), as well as educating the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the area to secure the protection, development and improvement of features of historic and public interest.


Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Association (SSAFA)
In recognition of support to service personnel, their families and veterans in Co Londonderry, Co Tyrone,and Co Donegal(Eire) through the provision of financial assistance, support and a listening ear at times of crisis and sign posting to other agencies to clients regardless of ethnicity, religious or political affiliation, age, gender or sexual orientation.

Western Trust Volunteer Group

WHSCT Volunteers
In recognition of the Volunteer Service, managed by the local Health Care Trust (WHSCT), which has ensured that patients and families benefit from over 1,000 hrs per week of care and support in acute and community settings across a wide range of specialisms.  This includes the provision of enhanced patient and family care support & complementing the role of the professional care staff throughout the Western Trust area which comprises of Limavady, Derry/Londonderry, Strabane, Omagh and Enniskillen.
