Keeping Children Safe – Partnership in Action

17 October 2016

On 6th October Volunteer Now celebrated with Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and South East Health and Social Care Trust’s Keeping Children Safe Initiatives as newly trained Keeping Safe trainers received their certificates of accreditation in Belfast City Hall from the Lord Mayor Brian Kingston.

Keeping Children Safe logoThe trainers, trained and quality assured by Volunteer Now are now able to deliver free child protection and safeguarding training throughout their Trust areas to community and voluntary organisations. A strength of the Initiatives is partnership, with a diverse range of organisations from public, voluntary and community sectors being involved at various stages of delivery. Trainers come with a range of skills, abilities, professions and links and join a network of trainers that have been delivering safeguarding training for over 20 years.

Speakers at the City Hall included partners Volunteer Now’s Chief Executive Wendy Osborne OBE, Alan Walmsley, Assistant Chief Fire Officer NI Fire and Rescue Service, new trainers Jonny Currie, Pauline Gunson and Alison Prentice, John Growcott, Co-director of Governance and Social Services, and Michael Murrray, Assistant Director Children’s Services and Social Work and South East Initiative Chairperson. Congratulations were extended to all the trainers and there was praise for the training and effective partnership working which demonstrated the key message ‘child protection is everyone’s business’.

Entertainment was provided by children’s drama group Elite Academy with the girls singing songs from musicals with much animation. ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’ from Annie seemed particularly poignant as keeping Children Safe training highlights issues of child neglect and abuse for organisations to be aware of and responsive to.
