From Local to Global

19 June 2017

Wendy Osborne OBE was a member of the IAVE Board (International Association of Volunteer Effort) for 6 years from 2010 to 2016.

With members in 70+ countries, IAVE's mission is to enable leaders of volunteering worldwide to stand in solidarity with one another to promote, support and celebrate volunteering in all of the many ways it happens throughout the world.

Following stepping down from the Board in December 2016, Wendy was asked to act as a Special Advisor to a major global research project on national leadership for volunteering. This research project has identified examples of leadership in 102 countries and completed interviews and surveys within 82 countries. it is the first global research into volunteering leadership at a national level and is very timely given the strategic importance of volunteering to delivery of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This research enables IAVE to understand better the complexity and diversity of the situation worldwide and to highlight areas where the development of national leadership is required. This not only informs IAVE but is also important information for key global partners such as the United Nations and global corporations, national volunteering organisations and governments.

In November 2016 national leaders for volunteering from 38 countries gathered in Mexico City, immediately prior to IAVE's 24th World Volunteer Conference, to share with, learn from and support one another. They used the initial findings of the global research to stimulate the dialogue and the three day workshop was facilitated by Wendy Osborne OBE.
