Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards 2018

22 September 2017

The Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards recognise and rewards second-level students throughout Ireland for volunteer work carried out in their local communities.

An all-Ireland initiative, the awards are now in their 12th year and have honoured over 2000 volunteers from 300 schools across the island of Ireland.

This year’s two all Ireland youth volunteers of the year were Lucia Quinney Mee, from Co. Antrim and Emily Duffy from Co. Limerick.

Lucia had her first liver transplant at the age of eight. Following two additional transplants, she became passionate about the incredible gift of organ donation and in 2015 set up the campaign ‘Live Loudly Donate Proudly’. Her aim is to make organ donation the norm rather than the exception with ordinary conversations leading to extraordinary gifts.

Emily and Lucia travelled to Washington D.C. in May 2017 where they met other youth volunteers from across the world, visited the White House and were congratulated on their volunteering efforts by 23-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps.

The 2018 awards open on 1st September 2017 and students should submit their applications online via the website http://spirit.pramerica.ie/ by Friday, 20th October 2017. The school principal will then review the applications before submitting a maximum of two applications to Pramerica online for national judging by Friday, 10th November 2017. All submitted applications will then be judged by the awards selection committee.

Speaking about the awards, Andrea McBride, vice president, Pramerica, said, “At Pramerica we believe in supporting young people in our society and we would encourage all school principals to shine a light on their pupils’ volunteering activities. As we open the 2018 Awards we are looking forward to hearing the inspirational stories from today’s young leaders who are committed to making a difference in their local communities,”

The 20 top volunteers will be invited to the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards in March. The two highest placed junior honourees, will receive a crystal trophy and €500 for the charity of their choice.

The two winning volunteers will receive a crystal trophy for their school and €1,000 for their chosen charity. In addition to this, they will travel on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. in May 2018 to meet up with youth volunteers from around the world and participate in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremonies.
