Progress of the Over 50s Volunteering and Health Study

The Unlocking Potential Project is working in partnership with the University of Ulster to carry out an exciting piece of research on volunteering.  This study investigates the issue of whether volunteering has an impact on the health of those aged 50+.  Internationally studies in the past have claimed a link between volunteering and sustained good health as people grow older.  Recent findings from the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing (ELSA) has recently supported these claims, however this study is the first time the issue is being studied in a Northern Ireland context.

The recruitment for the study finished at the end of October. We have 347 older volunteers recruited across 99 different organisations, which is a great achievement. Irrespective of whether volunteers came through from your organisation, we are grateful for the efforts you made in handing out packs and passing on information to volunteers, on our behalf.

We will be holding a research seminar in Autumn 2011 to update you on the preliminary findings from the health and volunteering study. You and your volunteers will be warmly welcomed at this event.
