There are many fantastic events happening in 2012 with the ‘Our Time, Our Place’ portfolio of events. It is a time for people across NI to celebrate and showcase what we have to offer in terms of culture, heritage, arts and sports on a world stage. A big part of what makes NI is the people that live here and it is fabulous to see so many opportunities for people to get actively involved in these events in a voluntary capacity.
2012 and 2013 are significant years for sports activities across NI- 2012 brings the Olympic Games across the UK. Northern Ireland will host the 2013 World Police and Fire Games. These events will be major attractions to local people as well as international visitors. They also offer the opportunity for people to be part of the occasion with the wide range of volunteering opportunities that will be made available. It is anticipated that between 3,000-3,500 volunteers will be required to support the 2013 World Police and Fire Games!
The North West 200 is the largest annual sporting event held across the Island of Ireland. The event requires the dedication of 800 volunteers to make it the tourist magnet that it is! Race day itself attracts 90, 000 visitors, spectators and fans and is viewed by a further 250,000 on TV (Economic Impact Report, August 2010).
It has been estimated that the increased numbers of people coming to Northern Ireland for the North West 200 generates 7.7 million for NI Economy each year. There is a huge economic benefit that comes from holding sporting / cultural events and it is important to recognise the contribution that people volunteering make to delivering good quality enjoyable tourist events.
