I started looking around for things to do. Someone suggested volunteering to me. I visited Volunteer Now on Shaftesbury Square and heard about a volunteering taster session at the Zoo.
Back in July last year, Alison Stuart took part in a One Good Reason taster session in the Belfast Zoo. Alison tells us what she has gained from taking that first step; “I was medically retired some years ago, after a career in administration, once my health improved, I started looking around for other things to do. Someone suggested volunteering to me. I visited Volunteer Now on Shaftesbury Square and heard about a volunteering taster session at the Zoo. Although I was a little nervous about going along on my own, I have always really loved animals so it really appealed to me.
I got such a warm welcome from the other volunteers there and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to go back! I now volunteer regularly with Friends of the Zoo, although it is on my terms and I get to choose when I volunteer and when doesn’t suit. The work is really varied, I can be helping to build habitat for animals, conservation, making tea and coffee at an event and there are some volunteers who are trained up to give talks about animals. Through volunteering you can gain so much: valuable social interaction, meet new people and have a real sense of achievement.
