I retired from work and had lots of spare time on my hands so I thought it would be best put to use helping people.
The Samaritans appealed to me as it offered me the opportunity to help people in distress and attempt to make their lives betters. I am able to offer a listening ear to those who have no one else to confide in - being able to listen without passing judgement or giving advice is central to the role.
I listen to the people on the phone but I also reply to emails and texts; I currently give around four hours a week; the best bit about the role is meeting and getting to work with other volunteers. The whole organisation is volunteer run and the highlight is when callers ring back to thank them and let them know how helpful it was.
I would encourage people to get involved in volunteering as there are always people who need a bit of help- always consider how much time you have to give before committing yourself and you won’t ever regret it.
