Love Volunteering on St Valentine’s Day
Love Volunteering was the theme of our mobile volunteering session held at Volunteer Now’s Shaftesbury Square office on Friday 14 February. Some 25 volunteers came together for a day of volunteering simply because they love it!
Following a scone and a quick cup of coffee to get our energy levels up, some volunteers got into the spirit by organising a volunteer assembly line to help put together packs for Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful (formerly Tidy NI) for their Big Spring Clean. Some people counted out the refuse sacks, some folded the posters and organised the stickers, some took control of the hi viz vest and the gloves whilst others packed the sharps boxes and literature. Meanwhile, some of the volunteers prepared shirts that had been donated to Action Cancer for reseal in their charity shops. Altogether is was a wonderful sight of people getting into the spirit of volunteering.
After 2 and a half hours of frantic activity, great craic and camaraderie, we took a break for lunch. We had a draw for some chocolate hearts and travel mugs from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and an a lovely gift of soaps and hand cream kindly donated by Urban Pharmacy.
The afternoon was spent volunteering on the Action Cancer shirts for resale and preparing UVB detecting bracelets for Cancer Focus.
Maureen Reilly, who travelled from Ballynahinch to take part in the session said, “It was great fun. I met lovely people and it was a super way to spend time helping others. I’d definitely take part again!”
So how much impact did the volunteers make on the day? Over 112 hours of time was donated to Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, Action Cancer and Cancer Focus. A huge thank you to everyone who took part on the day – you were fantastic!
