Big Spring Clean gets underway!
On 15th March 2013 a local volunteering group got into spring clean mode and helped out by putting together the Tidy NI Big Spring Clean registration packs at Olympia Leisure Centre in Belfast.
The mobile volunteering opportunity was in conjunction with Tidy Northern‘s big Spring Clean Campaign. The Big Spring Clean, run by TIDY Northern Ireland, is Northern Ireland’s biggest clean up. It is a volunteering and awareness raising campaign aimed at promoting volunteering opportunities for groups, businesses and individuals. The programme supports local community clean ups across all 26 Council areas. It is open to anyone wishing to rid their streets, beaches, forests etc of litter and discarded rubbish.
The Big Spring Clean renews community pride in our country and heritage. By cleaning up we reduce the financial burden on rate payers, improve the environment and encourage tourism and job creation.
Last year over 27,000 people lifted litter, which was more than double the amount of volunteers from the previous year. This year a staggering 53,626 people came out to participate in the Big Spring Clean. The target set was for 50,000 volunteers and it has been well and truly smashed.
Lynsey McCloskey, TIDY Northern Ireland Campaign Manager said, “TIDY Northern Ireland would like to say a BIG thank you to all the participants this year. Without you our campaign would not have been so successful, you are the lifeblood of our organisation. We hope to see you all again for next year’s Big Spring Clean."
