I have recently retired. I am a member of the U3A but have never really been involved in volunteering before. I knew that I needed to get out of the house more.
When I heard about the One Good Reason Action day, I thought that it sounded fun. Volunteering was new to me, so I thought that this would be a good way to find out more. I have not always been the most confident person but have realised that there is so much out there, compared with my mums generation when she was my age, but it won't come to you, you have to go out and get it, and say yes to things!
There is also a sense of adventure with an action day, the adventure of the unknown, and I enjoyed that too!
I chose to get involved with the action day at Belfast Zoo. I was helping to prepare habitat for hedgehogs, which was great fun and it felt good to know that I was doing something that would make a positive impact for the environment.
I really enjoyed it! It was an opportunity to try something totally new. I took a chance by going along and it really paid off, I enjoyed it so much that I have signed up to do more. I would definitely go along to another action day again. Once you have done it once it is easier to do it again!
