ROC Larne seeks new volunteers
ROC Mentors Larne is a new family mentoring scheme supporting families finding times tough. Mentoring encourages and empowers families to cope better with and recover positively from the ongoing challenges of family life. ROC Mentors aims to improve resilience and self–esteem, encourage well-being and improve mental health as well as help families achieve simple goals and most importantly help families thrive.
The mentoring role is a unique volunteering opportunity. Mentors provide support to the principal care giver in a family for at least 10 weeks either in person or by phone/video-call. Mentors are a ‘friend with a purpose’ providing person-centred support through one to one mentoring. The mentoring sessions are based on COACH’s strength-based mentoring model, empowering families to make positive life choices instead of building dependency.
Mentoring is a unique volunteering experience, all you need is time, friendliness and a listening ear. We welcome volunteers aged 18+ from all backgrounds. We also value those who have good listening and communication skills particularly over the phone. It is important that volunteers are non-judgemental, respectful and reliable. Knowledge of issues affecting families is desirable.
One of their volunteers says, “I am a family mentor and I can honestly say it has been a fantastic experience, not only for the families I have had the privilege to get to know, but for me as a person”.
